Born in Evansville Indiana which is a small town in Southern Indiana and the story of my life in radio begins there. I had just graduated Ball State University and was ready to take the radio world by storm. Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite ready for me. See, I lacked this little thing called “experience”. I couldn’t get any without a job and I couldn’t get a job without any. I was in a serious catch 22.
I went back to my serving job and six months out of school I was starting to get a little depressed. That’s when a tall, dark and handsome man walked into the restaurant and right behind him was Booker. He and his wife had seen an advertisement for the restaurant as they were driving into town and decided to stop by.
I carded him and saw he was from Louisiana and asked him what he was doing in Indiana. He said that he had moved there to work at a radio station. I told him my situation, that I was trying to break into the biz but no one would give me a chance. I made him laugh and he immediately fell in love with me Well, not exactly, his wife loved me and talked him into bringing in the Program Director and his co-host at the time for an interview. So there we all were on a Thursday, I was cutting pizzas so I had sauce all over my shirt, and we sat on the patio and had my interview. I headed home that day and told my Mom I was going to work for the radio station. She asked me how much it paid and I said, “I don’t know.” She asked me if I would have benefits and I said, “I don’t know.” She asked me what I did know and I said, “Hello, I get to work at the radio station.”
From that moment on my Mom became my biggest fan. She never missed a show and even carried around a little radio with her so she wouldn’t miss anything. I know, sappy but I love my Momma.
I guess that’s one thing you should probably know about me. I’m extremely close to my Mom. It hasn’t always been like that but over the years she has become my best friend and my biggest supporter. I could come home and tell her I wanted to go to the moon and the next day she would be helping me build a rocket in the backyard. SHE IS AMAZING. She listens on-line every morning now back in Indiana.
Fast forward five years and here I am. It’s been a great ride and I can’t imagine doing anything else. I love making people laugh and smile and I get to come in everyday and do just that. I consider myself extremely lucky.
